Karma List

Posted in Contributors, Recent, Reviews, Shows

Oh yes, I have a list and I cling to it tightly and hope but by some chance next lifetime I will get sweet satisfaction from being an audience to the karma that a select few deserve. And yes, day dreaming of ironic justice is an INFJ trait.

Just found out one of “the few” is an INFP. YACK! God no wonder. Which would of course be why he took offense to me suggesting he “man up” “grow a pair” and “get a job”. Ha! He also takes enormous energy in doing whatever he pleases and prides himself on bucking the system with self righteous indignation and holier than thou self perception. Always the victim of his childhood, always a victim of others. A passive aggressive idealistic arrogant princess.
And so yes.
Another INFP to add to the list.

I’ve met 1 I could tolerate and even that’s pushing it.
I’m just not a fan.

Last year’s Burning Man Festival brought 15,000 attendees through the airport and it is 2nd largest annual event to impact air travel at Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Last year the airport coordinated with Burning Man staff to set up a welcome table in Baggage Claim. There was such an incredible response that we are hosting an information/welcome table again this year. According to a “Sign In book” that was at the table in 2008, Burning Man gave true meaning to the word “International” in the name Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Visitors came from far away countries such as: Australia, Taiwan, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Scotland, Iceland, Argentina, Israel, Monaco, India, Columbia, Brazil, Switzerland, Egypt, Turkey, Italy and more.

In 2009, the Reno-Tahoe International Airport is taking our partnership to new heights! From Playa to Runway - The Art of Burning Man is the current display at the Connector Collections Gallery, located on the 2nd floor of the airport terminal building (before security). In an effort to share some of the event’s magic, this exhibit is comprised of several elements from Burning Man and is compliments of Burning Man and the Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF) It includes photography, souvenirs, three-dimensional displays and samples of the unique artwork that makes Burning Man so special. The exhibit runs through September 14, 2009.

I was told by the s/o - ” deleting your online accounts is your new equivalent to burning furniture”

I thought it was so sweet that he remembered I burned furniture in the past as fits of cleansing rage.
Ha! God that was awesome.

And yes. It builds to a certain point that I just can’t take it anymore. The constant chatter, bullshit, conflicts, and addiction to resolution that will NEVER HAPPEN.

It’s like a giant social hamster wheel and I am tired of trying to understand or make it fit, tired of being someone else and censoring.
Maybe just tired. I jump in with both feet and just get disappointed, with everything and everyone. But it’s not their fault, it’s my expectations, perception and consideration, of which others don’t seem to be aware of.
I know I’m vague and shifty and lord knows everything is between the lines but everyone has their issues, and mine seem to revolve around being “myself” in the herd, online or in my physical reality.

sigh…oh well, can’t say I didn’t try.

Tips For The Reluctant Seamstress

There is no better place than Burning Man to wear what you dig. Back when I volunteered for The Man we talked about Radical Self-Expression, this idea of Going For It, of opening yourself to who you really are and letting your freak flag fly. For many Burners, costumes are the door to accessing and expressing ourselves and feeling A Part Of It.

Home sewing projects, thrift store finds, random cool junk you found: do not be intimidated. Here are a few suggestions for the fly-by-the-seat-of-your-hotpants crafter.

*When sewing by hand, thread several needles before you begin stitching. This way you can keep on sewing when the thread snags or runs out.

*Very little can be done with less than a yard of fabric. I usually buy 2 yards of anything unless I have specific pattern measurements.

*Old or discount thread snags and breaks. Get the $1 upgrade and buy the good stuff.

*There are great sewing video tutorials on the internets. Some are for specific patterns, others are more how-to. Very helpful if you’re trying to set a sleeve or learn how to hem.

*That super-stretchy/shiny/holographic fabric is tricky to sew. You will need a five-thread serger to hold the seams and if you don’t know what I’m talking about don’t go there.

*There are clips and crazy-colored tubing and all sorts of supplies to be had at the hardware store. I have seen some amazing stuff constructed with zip ties. One year fellow Burning Blog contributor Summer Burkes made pom-poms out of yellow CAUTION tape. I was pissed I didn’t think of it myself. So good. Hardware stores carry reflective materials — good to keep you from getting run over in the night.

Also at the hardware store: grommets. I have mixed feelings about grommets because hammering them can be a pain — I once grommeted part of a shade structure into the floor. The trick is to practice with scrap fabric until you’ve got the hang of it (and to not use wooden anything as your work surface). Fabric stores carry grommet pliers for smaller holes. Use an awl punch pokey-tool to mark the hole, then add the grommet. Close with cord or ribbon, lacing like your shoes.

Measure twice, cut once. Follow the layout instructions that came with the pattern or you will likely run out of fabric.

Don’t pass up the as-is rack at the thrift store. If something has a busted zipper, take it to an alterations place. Many dry cleaners offer this service for cheap.

If all this is way outside your comfort zone, I have three words: jumbo safety pins.
